Artist Statement

I have been a practicing artist and educator for 40 years. Now a Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech, I continue to live and work in Blacksburg Virginia. My recent works give me great pleasure in that they continue my examination of forms abstracted from the natural world. For me the creative challenge is to find a means to sculpt the “unsculptable”. My current “Cloud” series converts the condensed ever-changing vaporous forms of clouds into solid interlocking forms that lean, by art historical and personal esthetic preference, upon a mode of modernist simplification. Beyond their material and formal sculptural characteristics, it is my desire to find pleasure in making the works and then pleasure in their physical presence. My foremost interest is in the creative adventure of form making, how forms can unfold, invite, caress, bring smiles and laughter, or repel, shock, even frighten. Possibly because of these particular times of disruption and discord, I have in this series of work embraced colorful forms rendered in stainless steel to delight, give pleasure, and offer discoverable wonder.

My focus is primarily metal sculpture and wall reliefs, as well as color prints. Recently, I have had opportunities to create large outdoor sculpture in stainless steel and aluminum. My work is available by commission for public and private art collections.

Additionally, it has been my great pleasure to have worked with Beverly Pepper, Cy Twombly, and Santiago Calatrava on multiple public and private sculpture projects.
